Paraguay elects Camilo Benítez and Armindo Torres to Comptroller General office

The Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies has elected Camilo Benítez as Comptroller General and Armindo Torres as Sub-Comptroller for the 2026–2031 term. The decisions consolidate control of the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR) by the ruling Honor Colorado (ANR-HC) movement.

Armindo Torres, currently the director of Sworn Declarations at the CGR, secured his appointment with 49 votes. His election follows the departure of Augusto Paiva. Torres has defended his technical rigor against opposition claims that his appointment was intended to protect President Santiago Peña, noting that his previous work included analyzing the President's assets during his time in public service.

The election of Benítez was facilitated by 14 deputies from the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) who voted against their party's official leadership directive. This internal division within the PLRA allowed the ruling coalition to reach the 64 votes necessary for Benítez's reelection. Opposition members criticized the process, alleging that the candidates were not given the opportunity to present their proposals to the plenary before the vote.
