Paraguay focuses on cattle breeding to rebuild livestock herds

Paraguay's livestock sector is facing a critical transition as the country focuses on rebuilding its bovine base. Between January and August, Paraguayan cattle slaughter fell by 21% compared to the same period in 2025, a reduction largely driven by a decrease in the slaughter of cows and heifers. This indicates a strategic retention of female cattle to recompose the herd.

To successfully increase the rodeo, experts emphasize the need to improve pregnancy rates, reduce losses, and increase weaning percentages. This production challenge coincides with strong international market signals. Paraguay recently reached a record beef export value of US$ 7,488 per ton in September. Additionally, the United States increased its monthly purchases by nearly 38%, and kosher production is preparing for a new season destined for Israel.

The CEA Congress, scheduled for October 19 and 20 at CONMEBOL, will address these challenges, focusing on breeding and genetic improvement to transform retained females into increased calf production.
