Paraguay severe storm causes widespread damage and power outages

A violent storm characterized by massive hail and wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h struck Asunción and the Central Department of Paraguay, causing widespread material damage. Hailstones, described as being the size of tennis balls or even human fists, reached diameters of up to 15 centimeters, shattering vehicle windshields and destroying roofs.

In addition to property damage, the storm caused significant infrastructure issues, including power outages. The National Electricity Administration (ANDE) reported that 58 lines of 23 kV were knocked out, though 39 had been restored by the latest report. The storm also impacted the agricultural sector, specifically causing damage to soybean crops in the Caaguazú region.

Meteorologists from the Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology noted that while such storms are typical for the spring season in the Southern Cone, the intensity of this event was likely amplified by the El Niño phenomenon. Authorities have warned of a potential new system of severe storms following a similar pattern, affecting several departments including Central, Paraguarí, Guairá, and Itapúa.
