Paraguay honors musician José Asunción Flores through festivals and exhibitions

Paraguay is hosting cultural events to honor the legacy of José Asunción Flores, the creator of the guarania musical genre.

In Asunción, the sixth edition of the El Barullo festival will take place at the Centro Cultural del Puerto on August 15. The event features a lineup of national rock and metal bands, including Vecindad Autopsia, Alto Voltaje, Extingue tu Credo, Mr. Hyde, and Norton 52. The festival also includes a fair for local artisans and entrepreneurs, aiming to promote Paraguayan music and independent culture.

Additionally, a photographic exhibition titled ‘José Asunción Flores, creador de la guarania’ has arrived at the Manzana de la Rivera. Driven by researcher Antonio V. Pecci, the traveling exhibit uses photographs and documents to explore Flores’s life, artistic commitment, and years of exile. This exhibition follows a tour that began in Villa Hayes and coincides with the international recognition of guarania, which was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024.
