Commemorations for José Asunción Flores in Paraguay

Overview

Paraguay is conducting cultural events and exhibitions to honor José Asunción Flores, the creator of the guarania musical genre. These commemorations follow the 2024 inscription of guarania on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In Asunción, the sixth edition of the El Barullo festival was held at the Centro Cultural del Puerto, featuring national rock and metal bands alongside a fair for local artisans and entrepreneurs. Simultaneously, the traveling photographic exhibition ‘José Asunción Flores, creador de la guarania’, led by researcher Antonio V. Pecci, was hosted at the Manzana de la Rivera following a tour that began in Villa Hayes.

The country is also observing ‘Guarania Week’ to mark the 101st anniversary of the genre and National Guarania Day. Organized by the National Guarania Secretariat, the programming includes musical tributes by the National Popular Music Orchestra (ONAMP) at the Port of Asunción Cultural Center, the National Symphony Orchestra’s Folk Ensemble at the National Congress Library, and the Municipal Chamber Orchestra of Asunción at Plaza José Asunción Flores.

Cultural expression has extended to dance through the 37th National Dance Contest, specifically the ‘La Guarania en Movimiento’ segment. Additionally, historian Juan Marcos González presented a new biography of Flores at the Casa Bicentenario de la Música, detailing the composer’s early life and his musical training at the Police Band School, which enabled him to develop the guarania rhythm.
