Paraguay instant payment system sees surge in digital transactions

Paraguay is experiencing a significant shift in its financial landscape as digital transactions through the Sistema de Pagos Instantáneos (SPI) surge. In the first half of the year, the SPI processed over 300 million operations, more than doubling the volume recorded during the same period last year.

Data indicates that in July alone, the Sistema de Pagos del Paraguay (SIPAP) handled 64.3 million operations, totaling approximately G. 85.7 trillion (USD 14 billion). This growth is driven by the SPI's ability to facilitate 24/7 real-time transfers. A key factor in this expansion was the Central Bank's decision to increase the instant transfer limit from 5 million to 10 million guaraníes per operation.

The trend shows a transition from large-scale transfers to everyday micro-transactions, such as small retail payments and personal transfers. This digital migration is being supported by infrastructure managed by the Central Bank, including the alias system and the development of a QR Hub to standardize QR code payments nationwide.
