Paraguay investigation into murder of 5-year-old indigenous girl
Authorities in Paraguay are investigating the sexual assault and murder of a five-year-old indigenous girl in the Cerrito community, located in the Abaí district of Caazapá. The victim was found lifeless in her home on the morning of October 18, 2026.
Forensic examinations confirmed the child died from manual strangulation and suffered sexual abuse. Investigators have detained two suspects: a 20-year-old man and the victim's brother. Both have been charged with alleged intentional homicide and child sexual abuse. Prosecutors are currently utilizing DNA analysis and biological samples to determine the specific level of responsibility for each suspect.
The investigation is also scrutinizing the victim's mother due to contradictions in her statements. While she initially claimed she left the child sleeping to collect another son from a celebration, neighbor reports suggest she may have left the child unattended much earlier to attend a social event. Consequently, authorities are investigating whether she failed in her duty of care. The Ministry of Children and Adolescents has requested an urgent socio-environmental evaluation of the household and protection measures for the victim's 12-year-old sister.
