Child deaths in Paraguay under investigation

Overview

Authorities in Paraguay are conducting separate investigations into the deaths of two young children in different regions.

In Concepción, prosecutors have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death for a 2-year-old girl in the San Luis neighborhood. The child reportedly died in her sleep following gastrointestinal discomfort. The mother indicated she had sought treatment from a naturalist practitioner using massages and prayers rather than medical intervention, believing the child suffered from traditional ailments.

In the Abaí district of Caazapá, investigators are looking into the sexual assault and murder of a 5-year-old indigenous girl in the Cerrito community. Forensic examinations determined the victim died from manual strangulation. Two suspects, a 20-year-old man and the victim’s brother, have been detained and charged with intentional homicide and child sexual abuse. Authorities are also examining the mother’s potential failure in her duty of care following contradictions in her statements regarding when the child was left unattended.
