Paraguay-Paraná Waterway expansion faces environmental and social warnings

Experts and local reports are raising alarms regarding the environmental and social consequences of the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway expansion. Teresa Sastre, head of Uruguay’s National Water Directorate (Dinagua), warned that large-scale logistics projects—including dredging, channel straightening, and port expansions—could fundamentally alter river depths, erosion processes, and hydrological regimes.

Sastre noted that dredging can cause sediment resuspension, increasing turbidity and reducing light penetration, which threatens photosynthesis and fish food supplies. Additional risks include hydrocarbon spills, invasive species via ballast water, and impacts on migratory fish and spawning zones. These changes pose direct threats to riparian communities, specifically regarding food security and traditional fishing practices.

In related developments concerning the Paraná River, legal and environmental concerns persist. A court in Buenos Aires province has ratified findings of irreversible damage to the Paraná in San Nicolás due to pollution, involving the company Atanor. While the economic sanctions against the multinational were described as minimal, criminal proceedings against executives are expected to follow.
