Paraguay President urges UN to include Taiwan in international agencies

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña used his address at the United Nations General Assembly to express strong support for Taiwan, stating that Paraguay will not remain neutral on the issue. Peña argued that excluding Taiwan from international organizations is a ‘stain on the United Nations’ and called for its full and meaningful participation in UN specialized agencies.

Peña highlighted the geopolitical importance of the Taiwan Strait, noting that potential conflicts there could impact the global economy, particularly regarding the semiconductor industry, which he described as the ‘momentum of the 21st century.’ He emphasized that Paraguay’s support is rooted in shared values of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

In response, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te expressed gratitude to diplomatic allies and democratic partners for speaking out on Taiwan's behalf. Lai noted that while facing challenges from authoritarian expansion, Taiwan remains a critical link in global democratic supply chains and will continue to work alongside international partners to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
