Dengue cases surge in Peru as El Niño fuels mosquito reproduction
Dengue fever cases are rising across South America, driven by the El Niño phenomenon and unusually high temperatures. In Peru, the Ministry of Health has reported 52,395 cases and 63 deaths so far in 2026, with the Piura region specifically recording over 10,000 cases and six fatalities. Health officials note that warmer weather has shortened the Aedes aegypti mosquito's reproduction cycle from seven days to as few as four or five days.
In response to the potential for increased transmission, Argentine authorities are taking preventive measures. The national ministries of Health and Economy are coordinating with manufacturers, distributors, and supermarkets to ensure a robust supply of insect repellents for the upcoming summer. While Argentina currently reports low risk and no active local transmission, officials are preparing for possible increases in mosquito circulation due to climate-driven rainfall and heat.
