Paraguay validates electronic passports with ICAO

Paraguay has officially validated its electronic passports within the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD). The formal integration took place in Montreal, Canada, during the Traveler Identification Programme (TRIP) symposium held from September 22 to 24.

By integrating its public key infrastructure into the United Nations-managed global repository, Paraguay joins the international civil aviation smart borders ecosystem. This technical advancement allows immigration and customs authorities in ICAO-adhered countries to perform instantaneous electronic verifications to confirm that chip-based passports were legitimately issued by Paraguayan authorities.

The implementation also provides a mechanism to audit microchip data, ensuring that biographical and biometric information has not been modified or adulterated by third parties. This shift to a single, interoperable standard replaces the need for previous bilateral validation agreements with individual nations, aiming to reduce transit times for Paraguayan travelers at international airports.
