Paraguayan film '¿Quién Mató a Narciso?' wins prize at Brazil's Bonito CineSur

The Paraguayan feature film “¿Quién Mató a Narciso?” directed by Marcelo Martinessi and based on journalist Guido Rodríguez Alcalá’s book won the top award for best South‑American feature at the Bonito CineSur festival in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The film dramatizes the 1959 murder of radio host Bernardo Aranda, a gay rock‑and‑roll enthusiast, a case the Paraguayan Truth and Justice Commission believes may have been orchestrated by the Stroessner military regime. Actor Diro Romero, who plays Narciso, said the award provides a meaningful closure and stressed the need to keep the memory of South‑American dictatorships alive to prevent their return. The festival, held from July 24 to August 1, also honored Colombian director Alejandro Calderón with three trophies for his environmental documentary and short film. Other South‑American productions received audience and jury recognitions, highlighting the event’s role in fostering regional audiovisual collaboration.
