Paraguayan politician Paraguayo Cubas cancels opposition unity meeting

Paraguayo Cubas, president of the Cruzada Nacional party, has canceled a planned meeting intended to unify opposition forces for the 2028 presidential elections. The gathering, originally scheduled for November 1 in Asunción, aimed to establish a mechanism for selecting a consensus presidential candidate.

The initiative failed to gain traction after only one of the seven invited political parties, the Partido Encuentro Nacional (PEN), confirmed its attendance. Cubas noted that despite formal requests for confirmation by October 23, most invited groups failed to respond.

Among the parties that did not confirm were the Partido Democrático Progresista (PDP), Partido País Solidario (PPS), Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA), Partido Patria Querida (PPQ), Partido Yo Creo, and Partido Participación Ciudadana (PPC). Following the cancellation, Cubas decided to hold an internal meeting with Cruzada Nacional authorities and potential candidates to discuss the upcoming elections. The party is currently promoting Senator Yolanda Paredes as a candidate for the contest.
