Paraguayan opposition unity efforts for 2028 elections
Overview
In preparation for the 2028 presidential elections, Paraguayo Cubas, leader of the Cruzada Nacional party, initiated efforts to unify opposition forces. Cubas proposed a summit in Asunción for November 1 to establish consensus mechanisms and a unified presidential ticket. While the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) initially indicated it would analyze the invitation, the initiative ultimately failed to gain broad support.
By October 23, most invited political groups had failed to confirm their attendance. Only the Partido Encuentro Nacional (PEN) committed to the meeting. Consequently, Cubas canceled the summit and opted to hold internal discussions with Cruzada Nacional authorities. The party has since begun promoting Senator Yolanda Paredes as a candidate for the upcoming contest.
