Argentina road funds: Lawmakers allege $1 trillion diverted from infrastructure

During a meeting of the Chamber of Deputies' Public Works Commission, officials and representatives raised alarms regarding the deterioration of Argentina's national road network and the management of the Integrated Road System (SisVial) funds.

Data presented during the session indicated that the budget for national roads experienced an 85% real decrease during 2026. Furthermore, while fuel taxes collected approximately $1.6 trillion in 2025, SisVial reportedly received only about $530 billion. It was alleged that more than $1 trillion intended for road infrastructure was not executed and was instead placed in fixed-term deposits and public bonds.

Opposition members, including the Unión por la Patria bloc, have demanded the interpellation of Economy Minister Luis Caputo to explain the destination of these resources. Gabriel Katopodis, Minister of Infrastructure for Buenos Aires, also criticized the government, noting that the fuel tax has increased by more than 1200% in nearly three years while road maintenance remains neglected.
