Paraguayan suspect detained in Chile for fratricide in Pozo Almonte

Detectives of the Homicide Brigade of the Chilean Police (PDI) in Iquique arrested a 43‑year‑old Paraguayan man who was living in the country without legal status. He is accused of killing his 30‑year‑old brother during a dispute on the night of 21 May in a deserted area of the Pozo Almonte commune, northern Chile. Police say the victim was repeatedly struck on the head and face with a blunt object, sustaining fatal injuries. The suspect left the scene, returned the next night to spend the night there, and only discovered the corpse later. A forensic examination confirmed severe facial and cranial wounds and placed the time of death between 24 and 36 hours after the attack. “Se realizaron diversas diligencias investigativas…pudiendo establecer hasta el momento la participación de una sola persona, la que fue detenida,” said Subprefect Marcelo Lausen. The detainee will be presented to the Tribunal de Garantía of Pozo Almonte for formal charges while investigations continue.
