Paraguay–Paraná Waterway faces political and technical hurdles

Developments regarding the Paraguay–Paraná Waterway are facing both political delays and technical debates. In Brazil, the project to improve navigation conditions in the northern section of the river has slowed due to political issues, despite recent technical studies and public hearings. This project is intended to increase fluvial transport capacity, particularly for iron ore originating from Mato Grosso do Sul.

Simultaneously, the new concessionaire for the waterway is planning to reach a 40-foot draft depth ahead of the original schedule through dredging and buoying works. While the plan aims to adapt to post-El Niño climatic conditions, specialists have warned against rushing deeper dredging without updated environmental and economic evaluations and adequate port infrastructure. The central challenge remains balancing foreign trade competitiveness with the protection of the Paraná ecosystem.
