Paraguay's Capital Asunción Sets Municipal Election Race Between Camilo Pérez and Soledad Núñez

The Partido Colorado and a broad opposition alliance have filed candidatures for the upcoming municipal elections in Asunción, scheduled for 4 October 2026. Colorado nominated Camilo Pérez, a sports administrator and leader of the party’s Honor Colorado faction, after he won the party’s internal primary with 61.34 % of the vote. The opposition coalition “Juntos por Asunción” presented former minister Soledad Núñez as its sole candidate, following a poll among opposition hopefuls.

Both candidates highlighted the city’s severe fiscal problems, describing the municipality as financially illiquid due to high debt and alleged irregularities during the previous administration. Núñez pledged a “change of direction” to modernise infrastructure, attract investment and end practices such as “planillerismo.” Pérez emphasized his independent approach, distancing himself from past Colorado mayors while urging renewed development.

The race pits the ruling Colorado Party, Paraguay’s largest political organization, against a unified opposition bloc that includes 16 parties, marking a pivotal contest for the capital’s future governance.
