Skydance Corporation completes $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery

Paramount Skydance has officially completed its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, creating a massive new media conglomerate named Skydance Corporation. Led by Chairman and CEO David Ellison, the new entity unites major film studios Paramount and Warner Bros., alongside television networks CBS and CNN, and streaming services Paramount+ and HBO Max.

The merger brings together iconic intellectual properties, including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC Universe, Mission: Impossible, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Ellison has announced plans to eventually merge the Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming platforms and aims to achieve $6 billion in cost savings within three years.

Despite the historic scale of the deal, the new corporation faces significant challenges, including an estimated $80 billion debt load. The transaction also drew scrutiny regarding editorial independence for news outlets CNN and CBS, particularly due to the political connections of the Ellison family. The merger follows a period of legal challenges from several U.S. states over antitrust concerns, which were ultimately resolved through a settlement.
