Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger halted by U.S. court
A proposed $111 billion merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery has been temporarily halted by a U.S. District Judge following an antitrust lawsuit. The legal action, led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a coalition of 12 states, seeks to investigate whether the massive consolidation would create a monopoly and harm competition in film distribution and cable television licensing.
Attorneys general argue that the merger could reduce content options for viewers and increase prices by weakening the bargaining power of cinema operators and cable providers. Conversely, Cinemark, AMC Theatres, and Regal Cinemas have expressed support for the deal. Cinemark stated that the industry requires financially stable studios to ensure the production and exhibition of films, noting that David Ellison has promised to release at least 30 films annually with a minimum 45-day theatrical window.
While industry giants argue the merger will revitalize competition, groups like Cinema United warn it may lead to fewer film offerings and theater closures. The merger remains suspended, with legal proceedings potentially extending toward 2027.
