Paramount, Warner Bros. Deal Faces Scrutiny Amid CBS News Turmoil
Paramount is pursuing the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a merger that would give it control over CNN. The deal, approved by shareholders, still requires antitrust clearance in the United States and the European Union, with the EU setting a July 7 deadline for approval. Regulators are examining competition concerns, and states such as California, led by Attorney General Rob Bonta, and New York are preparing legal challenges that could block the transaction.
At the same time, CBS News is in internal crisis under editorial chief Bari Weiss. Recent dismissals at "60 Minutes" and a contentious interview with veteran anchor Scott Pelley have drawn media criticism. One source said, "From a legal standpoint it doesn’t matter, but from a public‑relations perspective it could matter," highlighting worries that the turmoil could damage Paramount CEO David Ellison’s merger ambitions. Weiss, who may also assume an editorial role at CNN if the merger closes, is central to the controversy. To address regulatory concerns, Paramount has indicated willingness to divest assets such as Cartoon Network, illustrating the high stakes of the consolidation.
