Paramount‑Warner Bros. merger threatens ~2,500 jobs in Los Angeles County
Los Angeles County’s Department of Economic Opportunity issued an interim analysis of the pending Paramount‑Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a transaction valued at roughly $110‑111 billion that received Department of Justice clearance on June 12. The report, released June 18, estimates that about 2,495‑2,500 jobs in Greater Los Angeles County and roughly 6,000 worldwide could be at risk, primarily in corporate, technology, real‑estate and other shared functions that would be consolidated.
The analysis notes the combined company would carry about $82 billion in gross debt—about seven times current annual earnings—and aims for $6 billion in cost synergies through eliminating duplicate roles, streamlining technology and consolidating real‑estate. It cautions that “this estimate should not be read as a layoff forecast; it only defines the scale of possible employment impacts that may be subject to consolidation.”
Only one of the 19 films scheduled for 2025 from the two studios is expected to be shot primarily in California, raising concerns about reduced local production. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath warned that the deal “increases the threat to jobs, workers, and communities that are already under attack.” The report recommends the county submit formal comments to the DOJ and coordinate with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is investigating the merger and may bring a state‑level lawsuit. A more detailed 120‑day report is slated for August 18.
