Paraná and Espírito Santo see record low homicide rates in Brazil

The Brazilian state of Espírito Santo reported 405 homicides and femicides between January and July 2026, a 10.6% decline from the same period in 2025 and the lowest total for that span since the series began in 1996. July alone saw 47 cases, down 28.7% from July 2025. The Metropolitan region posted a 19.5% drop, the South region a 40.5% drop, while the Northwest region fell 10.3%; the North region recorded a slight increase.

In Paraná, the 2025 public‑security report showed the lowest attempted homicide rate in the country at 5.16 cases per 100,000 residents, a 37.77% reduction from 985 victims in 2024 to 613. The state also recorded its first homicide rate below 10 per 100,000, at 9.95, after a 23.87% fall in victims from 1,554 to 1,183. The governor’s administration allocates R$8 billion annually to security forces, supporting the continued decline noted for three consecutive years.
