Brazil homicide rates and police deaths

Overview

In early August 2026 Brazil reported continued declines in overall homicide and attempted homicide rates. Espírito Santo recorded its lowest homicide and femicide totals since 1996, with a 10.6% drop from the previous year, while Paraná posted its first homicide rate below 10 per 100,000 residents, reflecting a three‑year downward trend supported by increased security funding.

A few days later, data from the state’s Violence Atlas showed that the broader reduction in violent deaths persisted, falling 17% between 2019 and 2025. However, deaths linked to police interventions rose sharply, up 67% over the same period and accounting for roughly one‑quarter of all violent deaths in 2025. The municipality of Sarandi in northern Paraná remained an outlier with a high homicide rate, despite the state‑wide decline.

Together, the snapshots illustrate a dual trajectory: overall homicide rates continue to fall across Brazil’s states, while police‑related lethal incidents are increasing, altering the composition of violent deaths.
