Curitiba police kill suspect after 13 children held hostage at kindergarten

Police in Curitiba, Brazil, killed a suspect after he held 13 children, aged 4 to 5, hostage at the CMEI São Braz kindergarten. The incident, which lasted approximately three hours, concluded when special forces (BOPE) conducted a tactical intervention after the attacker began physically assaulting the children.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old José Tobias Elias da Silva, had a history of violence, including a 2021 attempt to push a woman onto subway tracks in São Paulo. Authorities stated he suffered from schizophrenia. During the siege, the man brandished a knife and a replica firearm, and spread flammable liquid throughout the classroom, threatening to set the building on fire.

While most children were rescued safely, at least one child sustained facial injuries, and five others were taken for medical evaluation. The municipality of Curitiba has pledged psychological support for the students, staff, and families affected by the event.
