Paraná, Brazil sees rise in police‑related deaths as overall violence falls
The city of Sarandi in northern Paraná, with about 128,000 residents, recorded a homicide rate of 35.8 per 100,000 people, making it the second most violent municipality in the state according to the 2026 Violence Atlas. State security officials say total homicides dropped 62% to just 10 in 2025, citing increased patrols and investigations.
State‑wide violent deaths declined 17% from 2019 to 2025, falling from 2,219 to 1,844 incidents. However, deaths caused by police interventions rose 67% in the same period, increasing from 288 to 482 cases and accounting for 26.1% of all violent deaths in 2025 – roughly one in four. The data come from the Brazilian Public Security Forum’s annual report and contrast with the reduction in non‑police‑related violent deaths, which fell 29.5% over the same years.
