Brazil storms cause road closures and voting disruptions

Heavy rainfall across Brazil, particularly in the state of Paraná, has caused significant infrastructure damage and logistical challenges during the second round of elections. In Paraná, storms affected over 7,400 people across 18 municipalities, resulting in 55 displacements and 22 people being moved to shelters. The rainfall caused total blockages on three federal highways, including the BR-153 and BR-476, and led to the transfer of approximately 3,745 polling locations in Curitiba and Guaratuba due to flooding.

In Prudentópolis, extreme weather forced election officials to transport electronic voting machines via motorcycle, tractor, and boat to reach isolated communities. In the state of São Paulo, a landslide on the SP-294 highway near Garça caused immediate road closures, while flooding in the Ribeira region necessitated a complex rescue operation for a motorcyclist using stretchers through inundated areas.

Additional impacts include a water main rupture in São João that compromised the local supply and the destruction of a bridge in the Serra do João Bento region of Grandes Rios. Authorities, including the Federal Highway Police (PRF), reported 27 highway interdictions nationwide during the election period, though they noted that all affected areas had alternative routes and no voters were prevented from casting ballots.
