Flooding, Landslides, and Infrastructure Damage in Paraná

Overview

The weather emergency in Paraná has resulted in at least five confirmed deaths, including a family of three in Ponta Grossa and individuals in Rio Branco do Sul and Tunas do Paraná. The state Civil Defense reports that approximately 24,000 people have been affected across 83 to 84 municipalities, with 3,544 houses damaged and 20 structures completely destroyed. The humanitarian impact includes 2,340 displaced persons and 611 residents left homeless. Severe storms and rising river levels have caused significant disruption. In the Vale do Ivaí, the Rio Ivaí peaked at approximately 6 meters above normal levels in mid-September. Recent heavy rainfall has caused multiple landslides and barrier collapses, impacting several state and federal highways. On the BR-277, a landslide near Guarapuava forced a total closure, though the segment has since reopened under monitoring. Other closures include the PR-170, PR-364, and PR-281. In the Serra do João Bento region of Grandes Rios, a bridge was destroyed, leaving residents isolated. Additionally, the Federal Highway Police reported 27 highway interdictions, including total blockages on BR-153 and BR-476. Infrastructure damage continues to escalate. In Paranavaí, 281 kilometers of rural roads have been compromised, affecting agricultural production and student transport. In Apucarana, the Schmidt Dam overflowed due to precipitation exceeding 150% of the historical average for September. In Ponta Grossa, the Quebra-Pedra River saw its volume increase nearly tenfold, submerging the access bridge to the Buraco do Padre Natural Park. During the weekend of October 24-25, heavy rainfall caused further destruction, including a bridge collapse in Cruz Machado and power outages impacting 4,000 properties. High rainfall totals were recorded in Pato Branco (204.2 mm) and Francisco Beltrão (165.6 mm).
