Southern Brazil storms cause deaths and mass displacement
Severe weather across southern Brazil has caused significant casualties and displacement. In the state of Paraná, storms involving tornadoes, hail, and heavy rain have affected over 15,000 people across 58 municipalities. The Defesa Civil reported that 2,057 people were displaced and 362 were left homeless. Three deaths were confirmed in Ponta Grossa following a landslide. Additionally, three tornadoes were recorded in the state between Wednesday and Friday, including incidents in Francisco Alves, Espigão Alto do Iguaçu, and Goioerê.
In the state of São Paulo, heavy rains resulted in at least eight deaths and one person missing. In the capital, a 12-story building under construction collapsed in the Penha district, killing six people, including several Bolivian nationals and one Paraguayan. Authorities are investigating the collapse, noting the building had been under an embargo since 2021.
Infrastructure damage is widespread. In União da Vitória, Paraná, flooding caused the Rio Iguaçu to reach 6.23 meters, leading to the suspension of classes in 18 schools, some of which are serving as emergency shelters. In the Ribeira Valley, over 12,000 homes lost power due to fallen trees and damaged electrical lines. Furthermore, a section of the BR-476 highway was completely destroyed by erosion and landslides in Adrianópolis.
