Overview

In early September 2026, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued severe weather alerts across various Brazilian regions, including the South, Southeast, and Center-West. Warnings included risks of heavy rainfall, hail, and potential tornadoes, particularly in Mato Grosso do Sul and the southern states of Santa Catarina and Paraná.

By mid-September, weather instability driven by a cold front and an extratropical cyclone caused a crisis in Paraná. The state experienced at least three confirmed tornadoes in Francisco Alves, Espigão Alto do Iguaçu, and Goioerê. The Civil Defense reported that storms affected over 15,000 people across 58 municipalities, with 2,057 people displaced and 362 left homeless. Three deaths were confirmed in Ponta Grossa due to a landslide. Infrastructure damage in Paraná included the flooding of the Rio Iguaçu in União da Vitória, which forced 18 schools to suspend classes, and the destruction of a section of the BR-476 highway in Adrianópolis due to erosion and landslides. Additionally, over 12,000 homes in the Ribeira Valley lost power.

In São Paulo, heavy rains resulted in at least eight deaths and one person missing. In the capital, a 12-story building under construction in the Penha district collapsed, killing six people, including several Bolivian nationals and one Paraguayan. Authorities noted the building had been under an embargo since 2021.
