Paraná River flooding forces evacuations in Corrientes province
Rising levels of the Paraná River have triggered widespread flooding across Corrientes province, Argentina, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate. In the provincial capital, 618 people from 183 families have been evacuated or have self-evacuated as water encroaches on low-lying coastal neighborhoods.
Isla Apipé has been severely impacted, with approximately 50% of its surface submerged and 100 people evacuated. The flooding has cut the main route, effectively dividing the island in two and isolating certain areas. Local authorities report that the river has reached levels five meters above normal, and there are concerns that levels could rise further by December, potentially submerging 65% of the island.
Across the province, the total number of people displaced reaches over 1,300 individuals. Emergency zones include Capital, Paso de la Patria, Isla Apipé, Ituzaingó, Paso de los Libres, Itatí, and Yahapé. Local municipalities and the provincial Ministry of Social Development are distributing food, water, clothing, and bedding to those affected. In rural areas like Puerto Tala, livestock owners are sheltering in tents to protect their animals amidst insufficient resources.
