Paraná and Paraguay River flooding intensifies
Overview
The Paraná and Paraguay rivers continue to rise due to heavy rainfall and the El Niño phenomenon, causing widespread flooding across Argentina and Paraguay. In Paraguay, more than 4,300 families have been affected, particularly along the right bank of the Paraná, with approximately 1,200 families in Ñeembucú currently in shelters. In Argentina, the situation has escalated significantly. In Chaco, over 1,200 evacuations have occurred in Barranqueras and Puerto Vilelas, with the Isla Soto hamlet isolated.
In Corrientes province, the flooding has reached critical levels. In the provincial capital, 618 people from 183 families have been evacuated or have self-evacuated as water encroaches on coastal neighborhoods. Isla Apipé has been severely impacted, with approximately 50% of its surface submerged and 100 people evacuated; the flooding has cut the main route, effectively dividing the island in two. Authorities warn that levels could rise further by December, potentially submerging 65% of the island. Across Corrientes, the total number of displaced individuals has reached over 1,300, with emergency zones including Paso de la Patria, Ituzaingó, Paso de los Libres, Itatí, and Yahapé. In rural areas like Puerto Tala, livestock owners are sheltering in tents to protect animals.
To mitigate impacts, Itaipú Binacional has begun lowering reservoir levels to manage forecasted rainfall exceeding 300mm, aiming to prevent peak flows of the Paraná and Iguazú rivers from coinciding.
