Paraná River flooding triggers alerts across Argentina
The Paraná River is experiencing significant rises in water levels across several Argentine provinces, prompting authorities to maintain alert statuses. In Corrientes, the river has reached its highest levels in the last year. While levels in the provincial capital and Paso de la Patria have stabilized, water continues to rise in Empedrado, Bella Vista, Goya, and Esquina. In Itatí, the river reached 5.15 meters, remaining below the 6.80-meter alert threshold.
In Puerto Vilelas, the river recently peaked at 4.53 meters and has begun a gradual descent, currently sitting at 4.45 meters. Despite this slight decrease, local officials remain on alert due to weather forecasts and potential new rainfall in the Iguazú and Paraná basins. There is particular concern for Isla Soto, where approximately 200 residents face potential isolation if low-lying access roads are flooded.
The rising river levels are also being felt downstream in Santa Fe and Entre Ríos. In Paraná, the river reached 2.86 meters, with projections suggesting it may exceed 3 meters by the end of September.
