Paraná to hold Brazil's first plebiscite on municipal territory transfer

Voters in the state of Paraná will participate in Brazil's first-ever plebiscite to decide the transfer of a territory between two municipalities. The vote will take place during the second round of elections, involving the residents of Chopinzinho and São João in southwestern Paraná.

The consultation concerns the Alto Mirim community, which currently belongs to Chopinzinho but is geographically closer to the urban center of São João. Residents of the community already rely on São João for most essential public services. A technical feasibility study indicated that the change serves the public interest.

A total of 26,069 voters are eligible to participate, with 16,883 in Chopinzinho and 9,186 in São João. Following the presidential vote, the electronic ballot will present the question: ‘Are you in favor of the separation and transfer of the Alto Mirim Community from Chopinzinho to São João?’. Voters will select option 1 to vote against the change or option 2 to vote in favor.
