EuroLeague clubs reject NBA proposal for joint European competition

EuroLeague shareholder clubs have rejected a proposal from the NBA to create a joint European basketball competition. During a summit in Cernobbio, Italy, representatives from the thirteen permanent shareholder clubs reached a consensus to decline the American league's offer, which reportedly involved a financial package of less than 2 billion euros.

Club representatives expressed strong opposition to the terms, with some describing the proposal as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘colonialist’. Key points of contention included the NBA's demand for administrative control and the requirement for existing clubs to pay fees to transition into a franchise model. While some clubs suggested remaining open to future negotiations with improved terms, the immediate response was a rejection of the current ultimatum.

Despite this setback, EuroLeague is moving forward with its own strategic transformation. The clubs agreed to convert their current 10-year licenses into permanent franchises. Additionally, the league plans to expand its competition from 20 to 24 teams starting with the 2027/28 season. The Board of Directors is expected to present a final recommendation regarding the franchise conversion process in the coming weeks.
