Paris Canal Saint-Martin: Unidentified Man’s Body Recovered

Early Saturday morning, firefighters and the river brigade lifted the swollen body of a man in his 30s from the Canal Saint‑Martin at quai de Valmy. The condition of the corpse indicates he had been in the water for several days. He carried no identification, and police have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of his death.

This is the second fatality in the canal within weeks; a previous drowning on 26 June claimed another man's life after he swam outside the permitted area. Swimming in the canal was authorized in mid‑June to mitigate the recent heat wave, but it is now limited to Sundays only. National authorities have reported more than 90 drowning deaths across France since 19 June, and dozens of young people have been injured after jumping from the canal’s bridges, an activity that remains prohibited.
