Paris implements new training amid extracurricular violence inquiry

Authorities in Paris are addressing systemic issues regarding violence and sexual abuse within extracurricular school programs. During a Senate inquiry, officials from the Brigade de protection des mineurs (BPM) defended their investigative methods but acknowledged challenges, including a high volume of cases that can delay judicial processes. Senator Agnès Evren highlighted concerns from families regarding long delays and a perceived lack of empathy during the questioning of young children, noting that child testimony is often critical in cases lacking physical evidence.

In response to recent scandals, Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has inaugurated ‘l’école du périscolaire’, a new training center for the city’s 3,000 extracurricular animators. The initiative includes a mandatory 100-hour training program aimed at improving professional standards. While the city intends to train 500 animators annually, some labor unions have expressed skepticism regarding the qualitative impact of these non-degree-granting courses. Additionally, all 14,000 city animators are currently required to undergo 48 hours of training focused on preventing sexual and educational violence.
