Paris officials face legal complaints over extracurricular safety scandals

Legal and political scrutiny has intensified in Paris following scandals involving sexual and gender-based violence within extracurricular school programs. Three families have filed criminal complaints for ‘non-assistance to a person in danger’ against Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and former deputy Patrick Bloche. The plaintiffs allege that municipal officials were aware of the risks and reports of maltreatment but failed to act effectively.

In response to these revelations, which have led to the suspension of numerous staff members, French authorities are attempting to reassure the public ahead of the new school year. Education Minister Édouard Geffray highlighted the implementation of a national protocol to harmonize the handling of sexual violence reports and the proposed creation of a national database of individuals dismissed from school environments to prevent re-employment in other institutions.

Julie Benetti, the rector of the Paris academy, emphasized that administrative divisions should not hinder child protection, stating that officials have a ‘categorical duty’ to protect minors and must strengthen procedures to ensure no situation of violence goes unanswered.
