Paris protesters demand halt to Rexhino Abazaj's extradition to Germany
Approximately 300 people gathered in Paris to protest the extradition of Rexhino Abazaj, an Albanian anti-fascist activist known as “Gino.” French courts ordered his extradition to Germany in mid-August following allegations of his involvement in a violent incident targeting a neo-Nazi parade in Hungary in February 2023.
Abazaj has characterized the legal proceedings as political persecution aimed at suppressing anti-fascist movements across Europe. He faces potential prison sentences of up to 10 years in Germany and up to 24 years in Hungary. While French courts previously blocked a direct transfer to Hungary due to concerns regarding human rights and inhumane prison conditions, the current order for extradition to Germany has raised fears among supporters.
The Budapest Solidarity Committee warned that being extradited to Germany could result in a subsequent transfer to Hungary, citing the precedent of activist Maja T., who was extradited from Germany and sentenced to eight years in a Hungarian prison. Abazaj has appealed the decision to the Court of Cassation, which will serve as the final stage of the judicial process.
