FC Girondins de Bordeaux sold for one euro to Park Bench

The historic French football club FC Girondins de Bordeaux has been acquired by the US-based investment fund Park Bench for a symbolic price of one euro. The deal marks the end of Gérard Lopez’s five-year ownership, a period during which the six-time French champions experienced a severe decline, falling from Ligue 1 to the sixth-tier Regional 1 due to financial instability.

As part of the acquisition, Park Bench will assume the club’s substantial debts. While estimates vary, reports suggest the debt is being restructured from approximately 26 million euros down to between 13 and 18 million euros, with a repayment plan extended to 12 years to ensure long-term viability. The fund is controlled by Evan Sofer and James Bord and already holds interests in clubs such as Córdoba in Spain and Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland.

The transaction remains subject to final regulatory approvals. The Bordeaux Commercial Court must formalize the continuation plan, and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional club control commission must validate the ownership change and the 2026/27 operational budget to allow the club to compete in the sixth division.
