Parking costs rise significantly in Utrecht and across the Netherlands
Parking rates in Utrecht have increased by 45 percent since January 2020, reaching €8.01 per hour. This rise has brought Utrecht's street parking costs nearly level with Amsterdam, which currently charges €8.05 per hour. The increase in Utrecht significantly outpaces the 32 percent inflation rate recorded during the same period.
Data from 123 municipalities indicates a nationwide trend where parking costs in many major Dutch cities have risen faster than the cost of living. Notable increases include Haarlem, which saw a 106 percent rise, and Groningen, which saw a 100 percent increase. Additionally, several cities have expanded paid parking hours to include Sundays or late-night periods.
In Alphen aan den Rijn, the municipality intends to maintain free parking in the city center for at least four more years. Since its introduction in late 2022, the policy has reportedly increased visitor numbers by 17 percent, though the loss of parking revenue is estimated to cost approximately €800,000 annually.
