Parkinson's disease research and support services expand

Researchers are investigating pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy as a non-invasive approach to managing Parkinson's disease symptoms. Unlike deep brain stimulation, which requires surgical electrode implantation, PEMF uses an external device to produce variable magnetic fields that induce weak electrical currents in brain tissue. While some studies show encouraging results, the clinical efficacy and exact mechanisms of this emerging technology remain under investigation.

In response to an aging population and rising prevalence, community organizations are scaling up support. In the Outaouais region of Canada, Parkinson Outaouais provides individual and group support to approximately 500 people to assist with movement, balance, and mental health challenges. Additionally, new home support services are scheduled to be offered in partnership with Santé Québec Outaouais starting in April 2027 to assist those facing mobility difficulties.
