Parkinson’s disease research and clinical developments

Overview

Research into Parkinson’s disease continues to focus on advancing therapeutic interventions, diagnostic accuracy, and patient management tools.

Clinical efforts include the Phase 3 trial (BRT-DA01-301) for bemdaneprocel, a neuronal cell therapy. This multicenter, randomized, double-blind study involves approximately 102 participants compared to a sham surgery group to evaluate motor symptoms, quality of life, and disease severity over a follow-up period of up to five years. Regarding deep brain stimulation (DBS), research indicates a gap in patient support; while U.S.-based neurology clinicians recognize the potential of patient decision aids (PtDAs), none interviewed reported experience using them, noting a lack of consensus on implementation.

Diagnostic advancements have highlighted the utility of combining dopamine transporter single-photon emission CT (DaT SPECT) imaging with phosphorylated alpha-synuclein (p-Syn) skin biopsies. While combining these tests increases sensitivity to 95.6%, it reduces specificity to 59.9%. Discordant results occurred in 30.8% of dual-tested patients, with specific clinical symptoms like hyposmia or REM sleep behavior disorder correlating with different test outcomes.

Emerging non-invasive research includes pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, which uses external magnetic fields to induce weak electrical currents in brain tissue, though its clinical efficacy remains under investigation. Additionally, community support is expanding, such as in Canada’s Outaouais region, where Parkinson Outaouais provides support to approximately 500 people, with new home support services planned for April 2027.
