Parma Carabinieri seize undocumented pigs in Reggio Emilia to curb African Swine Fever

During a joint inspection aimed at preventing the spread of African Swine Fever, the Parma Antifraud and Health Unit (NAS), veterinarians from the USL of Reggio Emilia and members of the local Forestal Carabinieri seized three hybrid adult sows that lacked the required identification tags and traceability documents. The animals were kept in an unauthorized, unfenced facility, violating bio‑security rules. The farm owner was fined a total of €3,400 for the administrative breaches. Because the farm lies within a designated ASF restriction zone, the pigs were ordered to be culled by the provincial police; their carcasses will be examined under the national surveillance plan for the virus. The operation is part of a broader control system intended to protect Italy’s livestock sector and the food‑supply chain.
