Partial Solar Eclipse Darkens Czech Skies on 12 August 2026
A significant solar eclipse will be visible across the Czech Republic on the evening of 12 August 2026. The Moon will cover about 70‑90 % of the Sun’s disc, creating a pronounced partial eclipse that peaks between 19:19 and 20:11 local time, just before sunset. Observers are advised to use ISO‑standard eclipse glasses or certified welding filters, as looking directly at the Sun can cause permanent eye damage. The event marks the most extensive eclipse in Europe since the well‑remembered August 1999 occurrence, and a total eclipse will not be observable from the Czech Republic again until roughly October 2135.
Astronomy centres and planetariums are planning live streams and educational programmes, and many Czech residents are expected to seek clear western views or travel to nearby high‑altitude locations to experience the darkness of the moment. The eclipse’s path will also pass over Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain, offering optimal viewing conditions in those regions.
