IAS wastewater plant in Sicily faces critical environmental remediation deadline

The IAS wastewater treatment plant in Priolo Gargallo, Sicily, is facing a critical deadline that threatens local industrial stability. The facility, which handles both urban and petrochemical waste, has been under seizure since June 2022 as part of an environmental disaster investigation. Technical assessments have highlighted structural flaws, including the impact of industrial hydrocarbons on biological treatment processes and a lack of adequate emission controls.

A Constitutional Court ruling has mandated that health protections take precedence over industrial continuity, setting a strict 36-month deadline for remediation works. This deadline expires on September 12, 2026. Failure to meet this timeline could lead to the cessation of the plant's current operating derogation.

To mitigate the risk, major industrial users are transitioning to autonomous wastewater treatment systems. Isab is scheduled to complete its detachment by September 26, 2024, having already tested its new treatment plant. Sonatrach has requested a delay due to supply chain issues, with its transition now expected in the spring or summer of 2025.
