Passe Ferroviário Verde expanded to Lisbon and Porto urban trains
The Passe Ferroviário Verde, a 20-euro monthly railway pass, has been expanded to include urban train services in Lisbon and Porto. This expansion allows the pass to be used across the entire CP (Comboios de Portugal) national network, covering Urban, Regional, InterRegional, and Intercidades services, with the exception of the Alfa Pendular service.
For Intercidades services, the pass is valid in 2nd class and requires a mandatory seat reservation, limited to two trips per day. The pass is available in 30, 60, and 90-day durations. The government and CP state that this measure aims to simplify rail access, encourage sustainable mobility, and reduce reliance on individual transport.
In response to this development, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has proposed further legislation. The party is advocating for the 20-euro price to be extended to intermodal passes, such as Navegante in Lisbon and Andante in Porto, to ensure commuters using multiple modes of transport benefit equally. They also propose making passes free for citizens over 65 and expanding the service to all intermunicipal communities across the country.
