Passenger rights and compensation for ferry delays in Greece

Passenger rights for maritime travel in Greece and the European Union are governed by EU Regulation 1177/2010 and specific regulations from the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy. In cases of delays caused by the ferry company, such as mechanical failure, passengers are entitled to specific care and financial compensation.

For delays exceeding 90 minutes, passengers may choose to cancel their ticket for a 100% refund or remain on board with free light meals and refreshments. If a delay exceeds four hours and requires an overnight stay, companies must provide meals, hotel accommodation (up to €80 per night for a maximum of three nights), and transport to and from the port.

If a departure is delayed by more than 24 hours, passengers are entitled to compensation equal to double the passenger fare, along with a full refund for any vehicle fare. Additionally, passengers arriving at their destination with significant delays are eligible for partial ticket refunds based on the duration of the delay.
