Patagonia attracts multi-billion dollar AI data center investments

The Argentine region of Patagonia is emerging as a major hub for large-scale data center investments aimed at supporting artificial intelligence development. Investors are drawn to the area due to its naturally cool climate, which reduces server cooling costs, vast available land, and access to diverse energy sources.

Key projects include a potential $25 billion clean energy data center collaboration between OpenAI and Sur Energy, with a planned capacity of up to 500 megawatts. Additionally, Pampa Energía is planning a 500-megawatt facility near the Loma de la Lata power plant in Neuquén province. The proximity to the Vaca Muerta shale gas field provides reliable access to natural gas for energy needs.

Proposed projects in the region vary significantly in scale, ranging from 30 megawatts to as much as 3 gigawatts. While many are in early stages and dependent on final financing, the interest is bolstered by the administration of President Javier Milei, which is implementing reforms and tax incentives to attract foreign investment into Argentina's digital infrastructure.
